My cello and piano piece, Manipulation, is now available as a PDF download. An audio excerpt is also available on my works page. Hard to believe I wrote this thing almost 15 years ago.
This piece was an interesting lesson for me. It was basically conceived and written in a very abstract way. Decisions were made about what the music would do (louder or softer, faster or slower, higher in pitch or lower, more dissonant or more consonant, etc.) before a single note was written. Somewhere around half of the music written during this exercise was then used to make the piece. I expected the performance to come across as a bit uninteresting because of this process. But after it was given to living, feeling, and capable musicians it became something better and more musical than I anticipated.
