So What if it Only Took 15 Years?
This is a last little shout out and reminder about my recital on Saturday. I do actually believe that this is this first time, since my recital at Towson, that I’ve performed solo piano pieces in more of a formal recital situation. I’ve done all kinds of performing, obviously, and done some playing of just piano but only in more casual settings playing non-classical selections or things like weddings where it wasn’t the main focus. But this time it’s a room full of people actually there to listen and pay attention, and I’m playing more difficult works than what I performed for my recital or, frankly, than what I’ve ever performed. So I have to admit to a mild case of pre-recital jitters. But I’ve been playing these pieces just about every day, and sometimes twice through, and I do feel ready despite the occasional rough spot.
The other nifty part is having two of my pieces performed. Both smaller works, but since I’ve heard neither in a fully realized performance it will be a good thing and a necessary step for me to start thinking of them as complete. With the new trumpet piece, I’ve come to realize that I’ve developed what I currently think of as a pretty nifty tool in my compositional arsenal. I’m now pretty keen to try it out on a longer and more substantial work to see if it also holds up there.
